2010 Election

Offices to be Elected

At this election, members will be elected for 4-year terms commencing December 1, 2010 and ending November 30, 2014 for the following offices:

St. Marys Town Council: 

  • Mayor (1)
  • Councillors (6)

School Board Trustees: 

  • Avon Maitland District School Board - 1 to be elected to represent the Town of St. Marys, the Township of Perth South and the Township of West Perth;
  • Huron Perth District Catholic School Board - 1 to be elected to represent the Town of St. Marys, the Township of Perth South and the Township of West Perth;
  • Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest [French language public district school board] - 1 to be elected for the counties of Oxford, Grey and Perth;
  • Conseil scolaire de district des écoles catholiques de Sud-Ouest [French language separate district school board] 1 to be elected for the counties of Oxford, Grey and Perth.

Candidate Information

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has comprehensive information for about the 2010 Municipal Election for candidates available on their website www.mah.gov.on.ca.   This is prepared for information purposes only. Reference should always be made to the relevant legislation and regulations.

Nomination Forms for Mayor and Council can be filed with the Town Clerk during the candidate nomination/registration period as follows:

  • January 2 to September 9, 2010 - between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
  • Final Day for Filing – September 10, 2010 – between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm

Nomination Papers for school board trustees are to be filed at the following:

  • Avon Maitland District School Board – West Perth Municipal Office in Mitchell Huron Perth Catholic District School Board – West Perth Municipal Office in Mitchell
  • Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest [French language public district school board] – City of London municipal office
  • Conseil scolaire de district des écoles catholiques de Sud-Ouest [French language separate district school board] – City of London municipal office.

In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, a nomination filing fee is payable at the time of filing Nominations.  The filing fee is:

  • $100 - Councillor or School Board Trustee
  • $200 - Mayor

Method of Payment is by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order.  No personal cheques or credit card payments.

Candidate Qualifications

To be a qualified candidate, a person must be:

  • a Canadian citizen,
  • at least 18 years old,
  • a resident of St. Marys, or the owner or tenant of land in St. Marys, or spouse of such owner or tenant.
  • not legally prohibited from voting; and
  • not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office

NOTE:  A candidate. If nominated, must remain qualified throughout the election and, if elected, throughout the term of office.
